Tree Planting
Inspired by the winner of Nobel Peace Prize for 2004, Prof. Wangari Maathai, the Kuching, Borneo Interhash 2010 Bid Committee has included ‘Tree Planting’ as one of the activities lined up during the Interhash 2010. Hence our theme ‘Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010’ Tree planting is an excellent way to give something back to the environment. Trees absorb CO2 and they also filter polluted air thus providing vital wildlife besides beautifying our towns and cities. It brings well being to our planet.
Prof. Wangari Maathai says in ‘Weekend Australia’, “Global warming is one of the major threats to the planet — to our bio-diversity, including our crop bio-diversity. It is a threat to our water systems and we all know we need water to survive. It is vital to our agriculture. Global warming is also a threat to many of our large farmland systems. So it is very important for us to recognise that the environment must be managed very, very responsibly.”
“It highlights the fact that it is not possible for us to live peacefully on this planet if we don’t take care of the planet.”
“Our focus is not just on destroyed or environmentally degraded areas. We also have the campaign to draw attention throughout the world to the fact that we need to protect some of the major blocks of forests such as the Amazon Forest, the Congo Forest and forests in South East Asia. These are very, very important for the survival of our planet. They are the lungs of our planet.”
The Hornbill Hash House wishes to emulate the successful campaign of Prof. Maathai to have more trees planted. As Hashers and to play our part in protecting the environment we will discuss with Kuching City North, Kuching City South and Padawan Municipal Councils to determine the places and/or locations where this tree planting activity can be done. We hope that the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Sarawak Forestry Department will be able to provide us with the seedlings for this exercise.
Details and further information on this activity will be posted on our web site once finalised a few months before the 2010 Interhash.
