A Hash Run PDF Print E-mail
[This is a typical hash run in Sarawak written by Mutant 1 in its unedited original form. The run took place at Kampong Apar near Kuching at 4.30pm on 11th November, 2007.  The Hare was ‘Mad Dog’ and Co-Hare was ‘The Hound Dogs’.  On On was held at Musi Halfway along the Batu Kawa-Bau Road.]

The hash set off at 4:30pm on the dot.  The weather was cool after a heavy rainstorm but all soon got a sweat on as the pack set off and it quickly became a hard climb up to the mountain tops after a swim through several lakes of shoulder deep water.  After a while there where only three of us together in the lead, Jiram, Swallow and myself.

At the first check I was very lucky and soon picked up paper on a continuation of the trail we were already on and we were soon way out on our own  with the main pack falling further behind.  Not having hashed in Sarawak for two years due to a broken leg last summer, I was struggling to keep up and was becoming very tired.  At the next check Swallow directed me to check on a down hill path.  Ignoring the old hash maxim “never check down hill”, I allowed her to sucker me into it and down hill I went slipping and sliding.  After the On-On was called by Jiram, “Oh shit” I had a terrible job trying to get back up the hill and onto the trail.  By the time I got back up I was now behind the whole hash, I got past GM Charlie (grumbling and complaining at the back) and slowly worked my way past the others, Reargunner, John Brodie, Elder Denis and the rest.  A real hard climb now and thankfully the next check appeared, this time I thought my luck was in as I quickly picked up paper and was off up a track.  Unfortunately this turned out to be a false trail so I ended up at the bloody back again.  Soon managed to push my way to the front again and was getting my second wind by now.

Next we started the down hill stretch, I thought the up hill bit was hard enough but this was much worse.  I kept slipping and tripping and sliding on my arse, since I broke my leg last year I have become a real coward, the down hill really frightens me, I am too old to break my leg again and so I walked slowly down the hill.

Once we got down onto the flat ground I settled into my usual pace and soon arrived at the kampong (village) where I was cheered by all the small boys and given a motorcycle escort by the older ones.

On the road through the kampong to the main road I came upon the co-hares scattering paper, boy were they surprised to see me running past them.  “Oh no, we are not the Hare” they said, so I ran a bit faster.  After a while I saw in the distance a figure in black throwing strips of paper onto the roadside, could this be the hare?  Oh yes it was and still a long way from the run site.

I arrived at the run site and checked in and had a nice cold beer with Hash wheeler while we waited for the others to arrive.  I was assured by GM Charlie that fast runners would be out in one hour, slower runners would be out after 90 minutes, obviously I am slowing up in my old age.

When GM Charlie arrived (grumbling and complaining as usual) the circle was called (starting with the Birdie song) and all sinners were punished in the usual hash manner.  The ice was warmed up by a few hash backsides including mine and Reargunners and afterwards we all adjourned to the On-On where I was further punished for telling GM that after all the time underwater we should change the name to “Ikan Billis” HHH.

A good time was had by all, looking forward to the next hash at 14 mile
